The monastery "Protection of the Holy Mother of God” in the town of Samokov was founded in 1772 by grandmother Fota. A wise Bulgarian, diplomat and teacher who took up monasticism in Ukraine, a great religious schema called Theoctist, who is also the first abbess of the monastery. The Historical Museum in the town of Samokov has a rich collection of interesting exhibits. Here you can see a unique collection of works by famous Bulgarian painters from the Samokov Art School. In the 19th century the town of Samokov had 4 big and a few smaller mosques. The only one that is left today is the Bayrakli Mosque. It is also called Ali Effendi Mosque, the Mosque of Yokush or the Old Mosque. The building was built in 1945, taking the place of an older mosque. Its walls are built of stones and bricks and the roof is built of wood. Among all the mosques, it was the only one with a dome which had 14 windows. The metropolitan church “Uspenie Bogorodichno” in the city of Samokov was the centre of the diocese from the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century. If you want to take a walk in the nature for a few hours, somewhere near Sofia, you could go to the Katina Pyramids. They are located at around 20km north of the capital, in the outskirts of the village of Katina. You start towards the town of Novi Iskar and the village and the landmark are right after it, it is very easy to get there. When you arrive at Katina, you can take Piramidite street. The National Museum of History /NMH/ in the city of Sofia is the national treasury of Bulgaria. It is one of the largest historical museums on the Balkan Peninsula.
